The 2007 season saw SCCA Soloist Mike Smith and his AMSOIL/Finger Lakes Synthetics Subaru Impreza finish in the trophies for the first time in five years. “Even though I missed one event due to a scheduling conflict, my consistent placing in the top five kept my Finger Lakes Region season point tally growing.” said Smith. “And, thanks to AMSOIL, the car was consistent in performance in the varying weather conditions we routinely experience in upstate New York. I’ve always appreciated the backing of such a great company. I’m often asked about AMSOIL when people see the logos on my car – both at Solo events and on the road. A lot of people don’t realize all the other products AMSOIL offers besides synthetic lubrication, so I try to let them know about Rain Clear, Brightside wax, cleaners, and conditioners, air and oil filters, and antifreeze – the list seems endless. AMSOIL has really progressed into a total car maintenance company. And people should know that.”
For 2008, Smith plans to take it to the next level – Pro Solo. “I’ve never driven in a Pro event before, and I think it’s about time to run with the best of the best and see what happens.” The Finger Lakes Region SCCA is hosting a Pro Event this year, and it’s expected 300 competitors from the Northeast will be there. Mike will also run the full schedule of Regional events. “It should be another busy season, and I’m hoping to bring home some more hardware when all is said and done.”

greater Rochester, New York area. The Championship Series includes
eight to ten events each season, including points events with neighboring
SCCA regions. Solo 2 is a driving skill competition, where you and
your car negotiate a course laid out in a parking lot or airport runway
and marked with traffic cones. The lowest time wins, and penalty seconds
are added to your score for each cone you knock down. To get
a good low time you must be smooth and precise, and quick. The skills
you learn on the course will greatly improve your car control, and help
make you a safer driver on the street.
