Mike Smith and his Subaru Impreza

are now 2 for 2 in the 2009 SCCA Season!

In the second event of the Finger Lakes Region SCCA’s Solo season, Mike Smith led from the beginning,

but don’t say “and he never looked back” – “I was never far ahead of the second place driver” Mike said.

“This time around, I put down my quickest run early on and then had to keep my eye on the other guys”.

After Mike turned in his fastest lap in the second heat, the rest of the Street Touring drivers tried to catch him,

knocking over cones and even spinning – but to no avail.

Mike ended up with another close win, .237 seconds faster than second place - 61.148 vs. 61.385 seconds.

 

“The speeds on this course were pretty fast for a Solo event” says Mike, “and I had the engine at redline several times on each run.

That’s when it’s good to know you have the superior lubrication that AMSOIL provides keeping things turning smoothly.”

 

The Solo series returns to the Seneca Army Depot in Romulus, NY for Event #3 on Sunday, June 21st.

2009 Season Inaugural Event

After his first two runs on the Rochester Institute of Technology "Sports Car Club of America" course,

Mike Smith found himself in 8th place (out of 11 racers) with cones down on both runs (cones incur a 2 second penalty). 

His second run raw time (49.770 sec) was quick enough for first, but two nicked cones cost him valuable time.
"I knew the speed was there", Mike said, "if I could just get a clean run".  He made a concerted effort on his 3rd run to prove his point

and recorded a time of 49.954 sec that moved him from 8th to 1st - but only by 3/100ths of a second.

At that point he knew there would be 5 runs, so he pushed a little harder on the 4th but went wide in a couple of corners,

which brought his time back up to 50.330 sec - still leading, though.
On his last run everything went really well and he recorded the best time of the day at 48.864 sec.  In fact, all 4 top finishers

recorded their best times on that final run!  As Mike said afterward, "I was pretty happy about it".


Considering a 2-second difference moved him up 7 positions, every little advantage counts.

Mike said  that "the extra power available because of less frictional losses thanks to AMSOIL, and the
brand new WIX air filter" were crucial in posting a victory margin of 0.895 sec.

   

 

Next up for Mike is Race Event #2 on May 31st in Romulus, NY at the Seneca Army Depot's airport.

The 2008 season is in the books and SCCA Soloist Mike Smith in his AMSOIL/Finger Lakes Synthetics Subaru Impreza finished second in the season championship points. “Once again consistent placing on the podium paid off.” said Smith. “And AMSOIL was a big part of that consistency. I’m often asked about AMSOIL when people see the logos on my car – both at Solo events and on the road. A lot of people don’t realize all the other products AMSOIL offers besides synthetic lubrication, so I try to let them know about Rain Clear, Brightside wax, cleaners and conditioners, air and oil filters, and antifreeze – the list seems endless. AMSOIL is really a total car maintenance company. And people should know that.”

For 2008, Smith took it to a new level – the Pro Solo event at the Seneca Army Depot in Romulus, NY. “This was my first venture into the professional ranks.” And his 5th place finish was pretty impressive given the level of competition. There were drivers from as far away as Colorado among the almost 300 entrants.

The 2009 season looks to be a good one, too – with a full slate of regional events and a possible foray into the Northeast Divisional Championships. “Once again, I’m looking forward to a great season and a great relationship with the people at AMSOIL and Finger Lakes Synthetics.”

The Finger Lakes Region of the SCCA runs a Solo 2 program in the greater Rochester, New York area.  The Championship Series includes eight to ten events each season, including points events with neighboring SCCA regions. Solo 2 is a driving skill competition, where you and your car negotiate a course laid out in a parking lot or airport runway and marked with traffic cones. The lowest time wins, and penalty seconds are added to your score for each cone you knock down.  To get a good low time you must be smooth and precise, and quick. The skills you learn on the course will greatly improve your car control, and help make you a safer driver on the street.
